Human Am I
| 2017 |
Morse Code. Illustration. Collaboration.
The inspiration behind this piece is from the personal story of the dancer who created it with me. While describing her inspiration for the choreography, she mentioned two main things: our humanity and the presentation of a news cast.
The latter inspired me to try translating the statement "Human am I" into Morse Code, which yielded this pattern:
.... ..- -- .- -. / .- -- / ..
That became the core rhythmic character of this piece, with the entire statement exposed in the first violin at the very beginning.
Created and performed as part of the Advanced Composition course in the Evening Division of The Juilliard School.
Recorded at the school itself, this kind of collaboration was a definite first for me. However, working with Angela Falk was nothing short of incredible. Her expertise, attention to detail, and collaborative spirit made this an experience I believe we both walked away encouraged from!

Blueprint
Utilizing the half-circle progression of the dancer's movement on stage, I mapped the changes in her movement (rapid/fluid) as the framework for musical form.
